Questions

My kids always have times when they ask the funniest questions. Sometimes not so funny of course. Every parent has this experience I'm sure.

Trey brought me down a couple pegs with the question he asked the other day. The conversation started because I am in charge of filling the Easter eggs for my family's celebration coming up soon. While I often have this task, this year I got the wild hair to ask every child what color they wanted for their eggs. Our tradition has been to give every child their own color so all eggs come out evenly during the hunt. Not such an easy task when you have a large family. We will have 12 kids hunting this year. Our family has collected enough eggs over the years to make this possible. Between pastel and bright colors it hasn't been a problem. So when I asked Trey what color he wanted, he said purple. This did not surprise me as he has recently changed his favorite color to purple because that's the color of Matt Kenseth's car now. (Nascar) But I already had two people on the list with a preference for purple so I asked him what his second choice would be. He said, "Do you have a red the color of blood?"

Now my first inclination would have been to freak out and question what kind of mother I was to have a child who would say something like that. But luckily I have an older son who indoctrinated me into the world of boys some time ago. He went through this icky stage of drawing monsters with fangs and blood running down and weapons of all styles and shooting and killing... I really began to wonder about him but I had a friend at church who volunteered in classrooms and said that this was completely normal for this age of boys and not to worry, he would grow out of it. And indeed he did. It was a stage. An icky stage for a girl who grew up with all sisters, but a stage just the same.

So did I lecture Trey and try to talk him out of it and tell him it wasn't appropriate to say such things? Nope. I said, "Yes, you may have red." And that was the end of that. For the time being anyway. Maybe my family will all read this before Easter and not be shocked when Trey runs around yelling about his blood red eggs:)

I have a friend who also has boys and posted about her conversation with them in the van one day. I'm going to put a link to it because I think it is just hysterical. So if you aren't familiar with links (Dad:) just click here.

I also have a sister-in-law who fielded the most amazing questions from her 8 year old daughter. It shows the difference between boys and girls quite nicely. Trish is going to have a baby so that brought up a lot of questions, obviously. But I was astounded by the range of Shelby's questions.

I am always amazed that people can remember these things enough to blog about them later. Good work girls:)

  3. Nice links. ;) I was waiting for you to say Trey went philosophical on you and said he wanted red eggs to symbolize Jesus' blood!
