Well, we're back! We had an awesome time at our adventure racing camp! It was at a boy scout camp in Mount Carol, Illinois. Camp Benson- really nice facility and beautiful area to see. I've decided to write in segments I don't get overwhelmed. On Friday night, after we checked in and got our cabin assingments (co-ed strange!), we met in the lodge and had our first presentation on navigation. This was very interesting to me because I've never been familiar with topographical maps and how to read them and plot points and stuff. Orienteering is a big part of adventure racing. So then we had a field practice on night navigation. We went out at 11:00 at night and basically took a walk around the grounds and the race director, Jerry, talked to us about specific things to watch out for at night. We also got to be familiar with our headlamps which was good for me since it was the first time I put mine on! We also won a headlamp in the drawing they had so that was cool.
Did I mention we had a blast? Dave has been telling me about this stuff for a couple of years but to get to experience it with him was so exciting for me. I've got lots more to say but I'm ready for bed so tune in tomorrow!
